Sandy began his undergraduate degree in Music at the University of Hull in 2011 and graduated with First Class Honours in 2014. Following that, he moved to London to study for a Master’s Degree in composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance under Stephen Montague. He was first introduced to conducting through the Hull University Music Society, conducting the Wind Band, the Men’s Choir, and helping with the Orchestra.
Since then, he has conducted Bohuslav Martinů’s The Plays of Mary, and Kotis & Hollmann’s Urinetown the Musical. He first conducted the Hessle Sinfonia in 2016.
Currently studying for his PhD in Composition under Mark Slater, he is focussing on accessibility. His opera, The Siren was premièred in Hull in July 2018.
After he skilfully conducted us through The Planets, a challenging piece which many amateur orchestras find too daunting to attempt, we were delighted that Sandy accepted our invitation to become our Musical Director. He took the baton again in July 2017, when the programme included his own composition Introduction and Elegy.
